Art therapy is an "experiential psychotherapeutic approach utilising many creative modalities within a therapeutic relationship with a trained therapist. A recent report from The World Health Organisation (Health Evidence Network synthesis report 67, 2019) investigated arts based therapies from over 3000 studies and found “a major role for the arts in the prevention of ill health, promotion of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan”. Under the NDIS, Art therapy is an allied health discipline that offers therapeutic supports under the 'Capacity Building' section of your plan, and is recognised by the Quality and Safeguards Commission. Art therapy sits alongside disciplines like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or speech therapy.

Art therapy is particularly supportive for those who find it difficult to verbalise their experience. Your arts therapist will work with the goals you've created in your NDIS Plan, and provide ongoing progress reports to the NDIA.
